Empress of the Blues celebrates the legacy of jazz and blues vocalist Bessie Smith through intimate performances by this amazing line-up: Paula Cole, Valerie Simpson, Nona Hendryx, Terri Lyne Carrington, Madeleine Peyroux, Allan Harris, Morley, Chris Bergson & Ellis Hooks, and Samara Joy. Your host for the evening will be Emmy Award winner, veteran broadcaster, and musicologist, Mark Ruffin, the Program Director/On-Air host for Sirius XM’s Real Jazz channel.

Ascending jazz star Samara Joy will join us at Bessie!

We’re thrilled to introduce jazz sensation Samara Joy for the #JusticeAid Spring Concert. Fresh off a European tour, the 21-year-old Bronx native is already being compared to the likes of Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald. Ebony describes her signature sound as “a gift in a package that feels familiar, yet, fresh and beautifully timeless.” For those in the know, Joy is a big deal! JusticeAid leverages the community-building power of art and music to transform awareness into action in the fight against injustice. Each year we identify and raise funds for justice causes by hosting music, arts, and educational events. Since 2013 JusticeAid has granted more than 1.5 million dollars to nonprofits working to ensure access to justice for the disenfranchised and marginalized. Our grantee partners are fighting racist voter suppression and racist policing, working to end mass incarceration and inhumane immigration practices, ensuring access to legal services, and addressing the criminalization and hatred of others.
