Washington, D.C. – August 16 – JusticeAid, a group of civil rights advocates and music lovers whose mission is to promote justice through the arts, is celebrating the right to vote at its fall concert, Soul of Justice DC. All proceeds from the September 30th concert at The Hamilton Live benefit JusticeAid’s 2024 grantee partner, Black Voters Matter.
Tickets and sponsorships are available. As with previous JusticeAid concerts celebrating equal justice for all, the concert is expected to sell out.
The Soul of Justice DC is an encore performance of the sold-out Soul of Justice New York City concert in May. It will feature classics from the 1960s and 70s with an emphasis on some of the most iconic and impactful songs in modern American history. Scott Sharrard, lead guitarist of Little Feat, will lead an all-star band, featuring vocalists Tash Neal, Chrissi Poland, Nicki Richards, Ryan Shaw, and Nicole Zuraitis. JusticeAid’s first Artist-in-Residence, Paine the Poet, will also give an original spoken word performance.
After the success of the NYC concert, JusticeAid made its biggest mid-year grant ever to its grantee partner, Black Voters Matter (BVM). The fall DC concert will also benefit BVM, one month before the major national elections.
In 2013, JusticeAid was created with a simple mission: to promote justice through the arts. In the 11 years since, the small yet mighty group of lawyers, artists, educators, and business leaders has raised over 3.0 million dollars for what JusticeAid calls “tipping point organizations” – nonprofits that are fighting to protect civil rights. A circle of donors covers JusticeAid’s operating costs so that 100% of every contribution and proceeds from concerts support JusticeAid’s grantee partner. Learn more at justiceaid.org.
Each year, JusticeAid selects a Grantee Partner and this year’s is Black Voters Matter, whose mission is to increase power in marginalized, predominantly Black communities. Their multifaceted work is guided by 5 key principles: 1. Understand, respect, and support local infrastructure 2. Black voters matter 365 days per year, not just on election day 3. Black voters matter everywhere including rural counties and smaller cities and towns 4. Utilize authentic messaging 5. Black women’s leadership, talent, and commitment must be recognized and invested in.
Past Grantee Partners include LGBTQ Youth (SMYAL), Police Accountability and Community Engagement (Neighborhood Defender Service/PACE), Voter Engagement and Voter Suppression (Election Protection), Defending the Rights of Immigrants (Immigrant Defense Project), 21st Century Debtors’ Prisons (Civil Rights Corps and Essie Justice Group), Caging of Humans with Mental Health Challenges (Mental Health Project of the Urban Justice Center), Protecting Children (Campaign for the Fair Sentencing of Youth, National Juvenile Defender Center, Youth Empowerment Project), Freeing the Innocent (Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project, Innocence Project New Orleans), Defending Veterans (Justice for Vets), and Expanding Legal Services (DC Law Students in Court and Gideon’s Promise).
