In a major constitutional rights victory, a federal court ordered the release of a transgender woman who was illegally deported to Mexico by ICE despite torture protections. The ruling rejects the government’s attempt to use immigration detention as double punishment for people who have already served their sentences.

“Let’s not mince words. The government tortured our client. They deported her in defiance of a court order to a country where she faced death because of who she is, then dragged her back, locked her in a men’s cage, and called it civil detention. There is no reforming a system that does this. Our client’s freedom is a victory, but the system that took a year of her life is still standing.”
