Did you know women are being prosecuted for being pregnant?
Each year, hundreds of women are thrown into the criminal legal system for behaviors that are only considered criminal or subject to prosecution because they are pregnant.
- Take the case of a pregnant Alabama woman who got in an argument with another woman outside of a store. The pregnant woman was shot in the abdomen five times. The fetus did not survive. She was charged with manslaughter. The shooter was not charged.
- Consider also the pregnant woman in Utah who refused a C-section and was charged with murder when one of her twins was stillborn.

Since 2006, Pregnancy Justice documented 1600+ cases where people were criminalized because of pregnancy.
Our 2025 grantee partner, Pregnancy Justice, is working to defend the accused so that pregnant people don’t end up incarcerated for behavior that—for others—is not a crime.
