About the Forum
Indefensible: Immigrants Trapped in the Criminalization of the Immigration Process will highlight the work of advocates fighting back against the violence of the deportation system, and for the rights of immigrants at the intersection of today’s criminal and immigration systems. Immigrant Defense Project Deputy Director Mizue Aizeki will moderate a panel discussion with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY); Alina Das, NYU Professor and Co-Director of the Immigrant Rights Clinic; Alejandra Pablos, activist and immigrant leader facing deportation; and Jonathan Jayes-Green, Co-Founder and Director of the UndocuBlack Network.
Meet the Panel
Mizue Aizeki, Deputy Director of the Immigrant Defense Project, focuses on ending injustices at the intersections of the criminal and immigration systems, including criminalization, imprisonment, and exile.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez represents the 14th district of New York. She is an outspoken advocate for immigrants, for the vulnerable and working-class people across the country.
Alina Das is Professor of Clinical Law at NYU School of Law, Co-Director of the Immigrants Rights Clinic, and faculty of the NYU Latinx Rights Scholars Program.
Jonathan Jayes-Green directs the UndocuBlack Network, a multigenerational network of Black undocumented immigrants organizing through deportation defense, advocacy, wellness, and storytelling.
Alejandra Pablos is an immigrant and reproductive rights community, organizer. Targeted by ICE for deportation, she organized #KeepAleFree, a deportation campaign fighting for her freedom.
The True Reformer Building was constructed for the True Reformers, an African American organization designed to promote social change. It was the first building in the U.S. to be designed, financed, built, and owned by the African American community after Reconstruction.
