Dear Friends,

An anonymous donor (not me) has committed up to one hundred thousand dollars to our Fall campaign for Black Voters Matter as a matching gift challenge. This means that the first $100,000 in donations to JusticeAid between now and October 31, 2023 will be MATCHED by our anonymous donor—every donation will go dollar-for-dollar to Black Voters Matter (BVM).

As Nina Simone sang in Mississippi Goddam, “Alabama’s got me in a sweat”: Alabama lawmakers defied a federal court order, affirmed by the United States Supreme Court in June, by refusing to draw a second majority-Black congressional district. Alabama presently goes back to the Supreme Court with further racist gerrymandering. “This is a shameful and arrogant continuation of a sordid history in Alabama that denies equal rights to Black Alabamians, no matter how the United States Supreme Court rules,” said Eric Holder, former U.S. Attorney General.

No organization does more to combat racist voter suppression than BVM. As we celebrate our 10th year at JusticeAid, right now your donations will be doubled to support their all-important work.

I hope to see you at our fall benefit concert with Tank and the Bangas on October 16th, and that you’ll join me in making a donation right now that will have twice the impact.

Enjoy the show while taking a stand on voter suppression. 100% of all concert proceeds go to Black Voters Matter.
All donations will go twice as far thanks to our anonymous matching gift donor. Contribute $500+ by Oct. 1 to be listed as a donor in the concert program.

A dubious distinction: Texas is ranked last in the nation with regard to voter registration and voting access, fueled in part by S.B. 1, an omnibus voter suppression package that overcame Democratic resistance and became law in 2021. But this week, a trial of six consolidated federal lawsuits is challenging the infamous election law. Follow Democracy Docket’s coverage
