KANDACE SPRINGS MADE HER FOURTH APPEARANCE WITH JUSTICEAID ON OCTOBER 11, 2022. SEE SUMMARY.

Kandace Springs’ musical melding of soul, jazz, and pop draws its inspiration from years of musical traditions, and yet somehow her sound is still revolutionary. The Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and pianist shows off immense talent on her debut release, Soul Eyes. Her remake of Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me” attracted the attention of Prince, who asked her to perform with him for the 30th-anniversary concert of Purple Rain. Known for her smoky voice and dramatic phrasing, her second album, Indigo, was released in March 2018.

In March 2020, Springs released her third studio album, The Women Who Raised Me (Blue Note Records), a cover album featuring renditions of songs made famous by some of history’s most iconic vocalists, including Ella Fitzgerald, Astrud Gilberto, Billie Holiday, Diana Krall, Carmen McRae, Sade, and Nina Simone.

From the first second of Kandace Springs‘ new album — as those warm, hand-plucked bass notes fill the air — you know you’ve arrived at something different. And once she starts singing, well, it’s pretty clear The Women Who Raised Me exists apart from the normal rules that govern space, time, and talent.

Kandace’s third performance for JusticeAid took place at our May 18, 2020 virtual concert, Voices to Protect the Vote, in support of Election Protection and the 866-OUR-VOTE coalition hotline. In 2017, she performed at an all-female artist night celebrating Bob Dylan in support of the Mental Health Project of the Urban Justice Center. The event took place on May 24, 2017, at the City Winery in NYC. The following year, she returned for JusticeAid’s Billie Holiday celebration in support of Civil Rights Corps and Essie Justice Group. The concert was held at The Hamilton on April 24, 2018, in Washington DC.
